BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The KCTC Hospitality / Culinary Instructor shall deliver the State of Michigan Curriculum for CIP (12.0500) as regulated by the Office of Career and Technical Education to students at Kent Career Technical Center.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Interim Occupational Certificate or Occupational Education Certificate in Hospitality/Food Service (CIP Code 12.0500) preferred, OR qualify for Annual Career Authorization – Minimum of two years or 4,000 hours (within last 5 years) of recent and relevant work experience in the industry.
  2. Bachelor’s degree preferred
  3. Prefer valid Michigan Professional/Provisional Teacher Certification in a related curriculum
  4. Must have knowledge and experience in short-order cooking, large-quantity cooking, and commercial bakery production
  5. Knowledge of the travel and tourism industry and hospitality management
  6. Communication, organizational, and networking skills required
  7. Must possess excellent organizational skills, technology skills, be detailed and team-oriented, and have excellent communication skills
  8. Experience working with high school-age students and diverse student population, preferred

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Design, prepare, and deliver curriculum content that:
    1. Is in alignment with the State of Michigan and the Kent ISD/KCTC curriculum constructs.
    2. Supports student learning through a variety of delivery methods: project-based learning, online, and in-person.
    3. Incorporates current equipment and technology into education models.
    4. Supports programs’ focus on preparing students for post-secondary education experiences such as PBL, Equity, Inclusion, Restorative Practices, Distinguished teacher pedagogical knowledge, etc.
    5. Incorporates cross-curricular concepts of Math, English, and Science.
  2. Maintain an instructional environment that is:
    1. Promotes learning opportunities for all.
    2. Provides for an equitable and balanced assessment of student achievement by a variety of methods.
    3. Promotes individual student responsibility and accountability.
  3. Instruct students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
  4. Develop project-based learning experiences and effectively integrate lab equipment into student learning and assessment.
  5. Assign lessons and correct homework.
  6. Administer tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports informing parents of progress.
  7. Keep attendance records.
  8. Remain current with reporting requirements, trends, and changes in CTE education.
  9. Create and collaborate with an advisory committee.
  10. Maintain a positive system of classroom management.
  11. Meet with parents to discuss student progress and problems.
  12. Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  13. Perform related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting a course of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems.
  14. Facilitate work-based learning experiences for students (field trips, job shadows, internships, job placement).
  15. Promote and market the Hospitality program and overall KCTC programs.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  2. Experience with or proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Google Suite.
  3. Experience with diverse learners.
  4. Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities. Demonstrates the ability to examine the impact of education inequities in student achievement outcomes as it aligns with race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
  5. Demonstrates building relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  6. Preference for delivery of MTSS and Social Emotional Learning leadership or school coaching.

Placement on the BA scale is required unless candidate holds a valid State of Michigan Standard CTE teaching certificate. (BA Step 1-5 = $48,819-$59,260/year).           

  • Placement on BA+18, MA, or MA+ lanes is considered after receipt of a valid State of Michigan Standard CTE teaching certificate, per Master Agreement.
